Rients Dijkstra on cover of third edition STRICT
Proper use of the plinths is essential for an attractive public space. In addition to a skyscraper, a building must also be a groundscraper, as stated in RCD's structural vision. The groundscraper stands for the aim that high-profile and innovative high-rise buildings also contribute to an appealing street life. The programming of the plinth should stimulate the urban dynamics and the continuity of the cityscape.
New projects with a lively plinth
A number of large projects is currently being developed, such as the Tree House (PLP Architecture & ZUS), the Modernist (MVRDV) and the redevelopment of the Schiekadeblok, all combining residential functions with a lively plinth. The successful Biergarten (Nikki van Dijk) returns in a new form.
Rotterdam Central District not yet finished
Rients emphasizes that the RCD is not "finished" after these new developments. It will take at least another 12 years before all the lifeless plinths of the RCD are transformed into lively places to stay. Read the magazine online at www.strictrotterdam.com
