The sustainability transition

Flanders’ spatial model is characterised by scattered low-density housing, a high number of detached dwellings, a heavy use of space, and low mobility efficiency. This model has a negative effect on the climate and energy crisis. The Flemish government architect therefore aims to change the use of space as part of the region’s transition to sustainability.

The scans will help local authorities to embark on this task. Each municipality will receive a quick multidisciplinary audit providing insight into its spatial and policy-related strengths and weaknesses. The tool will also suggest solutions for making the shift to a more pleasant, healthy and inclusive living environment.

Schedule

We will begin by making scans for Kortemark, Lier and Sint-Martens-Latum this autumn. In spring 2019 we will turn our attention to Lede, Bocholt and Halle. Other cities and villages will follow. PosadMaxwan is receiving assistance with the scans from expert parties including Generation.Energy (climate and energy), v-eld (landscape), Deltares (water and subsurface) and 2DVW (architecture).
