On behalf of the Province of Groningen, PosadMaxwan, in collaboration with Berenschot, has developed a perspective for 2050 for the Northern Netherlands. An inspiring view of the future that focuses on broad prosperity, accessibility, sustainability and innovation.
The Perspective 2050 is an overarching vision of the future that outlines how the broad prosperity of the Northern Netherlands can grow along with the rest of the Netherlands, while maintaining its identity and landscape. The content is based on a large number of policy and vision documents, including spatial proposals, the preliminary draft of the Nota Ruimte, economic agendas and earlier documents within the Delta Plan for the Northern Netherlands.
To ensure a high level of prosperity throughout the Northern Netherlands by 2050, a common vision of the future is needed. This is developed on the basis of three dominant perspectives: spatial, economic and societal.
Spatial
The spatial quality of cities, villages and the landscape is and will remain an important strength of the region, with a future-proof agricultural sector and sustainable living and working. Water, soil, nature and the value and identity of the landscape are core qualities that we treat with care.
Economic
The Northern Netherlands has a rich diversity of clusters that together contribute to a strong economy. The region is strengthening its strong position in renewable energy, circular economy and sustainable production processes. This requires a well-connected network of innovation and knowledge clusters, not only within the North itself, but also with the rest of the country.
Societal
We improve broad prosperity in all regions, with fair opportunities for all residents. Housing construction and restructuring of existing residential areas contribute to the national and regional need, while maintaining facilities and quality of life in cores. This requires a good connection between cities and villages, both regionally, interregionally and locally.

The starting point for the development of the Northern Netherlands is to invest in accessibility. The national and regional governments are exploring various possibilities, such as the Lelylijn, the Nedersaksenlijn and the reinforcement of the existing railway. This Perspective 2050 outlines the overall future picture for the region and provides a structural impulse for the quality of life and broad prosperity of the entire Netherlands.
