How do you transform a fragmented public transport hub into a vibrant, green and connected place for the future? Together with the municipalities of Zeist and Utrechtse Heuvelrug, Stadkwadraat and Cocosmos, PosadMaxwan is working on the area vision for the Driebergen Zeist station area.

This vision outlines the contours of a new core: a place where living, working, meeting and relaxing go hand in hand with valuable nature, cultural history and a future-proof mobility approach. Not as a blueprint, but as a guiding compass for the coming years.

A smart, compact development strategy
The proposed area vision opts for a compact urban core immediately around the station. By concentrating higher buildings here, more space for nature and landscape is preserved, both in the area itself and around the surrounding villages. The station area thus grows into a recognizable place where quality, cohesion and sustainable choices are paramount.

Five themes form the backbone of the vision

  • Transitional landscape on the flank - strengthen nature and ecology as a carrier of the area
  • New destination on the Stichtse Lustwarande - with respect for heritage and the unique landscape structure
  • Compact core - efficient use of space, with attention to mixed functions and an attractive urban environment
  • Active mobility first - walking, cycling and public transport as a starting point, not an afterthought
  • Healthy neighborhood for young and old - where meeting, well-being and community building are central

Co-creation as common theme
In 2024 and early 2025, discussions were held with residents, business owners and stakeholders. Their ideas and concerns visibly guided the area vision. Urban planner Juliette of PosadMaxwan also explained the principles and opportunities of the vision in a video, an invitation to help think about the future of this special place.

Decision-making is the next step
The area vision is now ready in draft form. After the summer of 2025 it will be submitted to the municipal councils of Zeist and Utrechtse Heuvelrug for adoption.
