Eindhoven continues to grow and the district of Gestel plays a key role in this. The Municipality of Eindhoven in collaboration with PosadMaxwan and Cocosmos developed an ambitious vision for the construction of 3,500 to 6,000 homes with the goal of creating a vibrant and sustainable district for both current and future residents.

Gestel has a rich history of being a rural community that has grown into an important part of Eindhoven. Now the district faces challenges such as climate adaptation, infrastructure requirements and the need for diverse housing solutions. Together with residents, we developed a vision that balances urban growth with a future-proof living environment, while preserving the district's own identity and green character.
The people most familiar with the district are best equipped to identify what it needs. That is why we went through an extensive participation process in which all residents and entrepreneurs could give input. We sought out residents during street interviews, organized community meetings and and created online opportunities for harder-to-reach groups to contribute.
The vision focuses on key locations, such as the intersections along the HOV4 route, and is built around four key ambitions:
1. Recognizable identity
Future developments will respect and enhance the diversity of neighborhoods, preserving each neighborhood's unique identity. Gestel will retain its small-scale and welcoming character, with a balance between urban vibrancy and tranquility. Important historic routes will be redeveloped to enhance their intimate charm.
2. Connecting destinations and bonding the community
Gestel has several "hearts" - squares, community centers and parks - scattered throughout the area. These are connected by slow-moving traffic routes and green-blue corridors that enhance both accessibility and ecological cohesion. New infrastructure focuses on improving mobility for cyclists and pedestrians, with safe and efficient connections between neighborhoods and green spaces. At the same time, gathering places and amenities are strengthened to promote a sense of community.
3. The right facilities in the right place
The aim is to provide a well-distributed and diverse range of facilities that meets the needs of residents of all ages. The Kastelenplein district center will be strengthened as a vibrant center for basic services, with space for health care, sports facilities and inclusive playgrounds. Densification provides opportunities for new amenities so that both current and future residents can benefit from a high quality and diverse range of facilities.
4. A place-specific and targeted densification strategy
With the addition of 3,500 to 6,000 new homes, the area vision focuses on sustainable growth that enhances the area's existing qualities. Even with densification, Gestel retains its small-scale character by carefully making space for new housing, energy solutions and infrastructure. Sustainable energy facilities and improved accessibility are crucial themes, as is diversifying the housing supply to meet the diverse needs of different populations.
By connecting new and old elements, urban and green spaces, and responding to the changing needs of the diverse population, Gestel aims to become a vibrant and attractive part of Eindhoven that improves the quality of life for everyone. The council has adopted the area vision Groots Gestel.
