As the gateway to Antwerp, Astridplein has long been an important urban hub. In a joint tender, PosadMaxwan developed a design that transforms the square into a space that is both pedestrian focused and responsive to the dynamics of the city. The result is a vibrant, climate adaptive square that balances local uses and urban needs.

With a rich history, Astridplein is an important crossroads in the development of Antwerp. Once known as 'Statieplein' (Station Square), it was where the railroad entered the city and an important interchange for trains, trams, cars and bicycles. Today, the square not only offers breathing space in a paved and dense neighborhood with a diverse population, but also a unique opportunity to connect its rich history with modern urban life.
Together with Felixx, Benthem Crouwel Architects, MINT, Ara, ABT, Common Ground and De Groote De Man, we participated in the tender for the redesign of the historic Astridplein. Although we did not win the contract, we are proud of our proposal and the collaboration with the other partners involved. The design contributes to the transformation of Astridplein into a sustainable, accessible and green space for the city.
Generous city foyer
Our vision for the square focuses on its transformation into a generous city foyer - a space that is both a transition zone between the city and the station and a destination for residents and visitors. By focusing on the pedestrian, the design strikes a new balance between local use and the square's function within the wider city region. As a result, the square is given the grandeur that the historic station, Zoo and Queen Elizabeth Hall deserve.
The plan proposes to develop the station area as three articulated squares, each with its own identity and contributing to the strengthening of the urban fabric. From the dynamic and green space of Astridplein to the quiet spots of Flamingoplein, this layout promotes quality of stay and provides space for events and tranquility.
Quality of stay above, infrastructure below
Astridplein will become a vibrant place to stay and transfer by designing the ground level as a pleasant place to move and spend time, while making efficient use of the underground levels for infrastructure. We bundle the public transport hubs under the familiar names of Astrid and Diamant metro stations, and the square acts as a central link between the various destinations. It will be a vibrant, multifunctional space that combines travel and stay.
Climate adaptation
The design also pays close attention to climate adaptation. The square will become a climate machine with water features that contribute both to water buffering during heavy rainfall and cooling during hot days. This includes an innovative water system that transforms the plaza into a functional and sustainable space. The monumental water table plays a unifying role and together with the green structure, the square will be one of Antwerp's leading public spaces with water at its heart.
By integrating the natural stone paving from the surrounding area, the water square and the green planting areas, a monumental landscape is created that both respects the history of the site and meets the demands of the future.
1. Full water feature: In the evening and at night, the water table will be completely filled, giving it a serene appearance and concentrating circulation in the surrounding walkways. This increases social control and gives the central square a naturally enclosed character.
2. Paths: During peak times, in the morning and evening, the water level will be lowered, so that diagonal paths dry up. These offer a quick and practical passage to the station.
3. Compartmentalization: In summer or during events, the water level can be further lowered into separate compartments. This reduces water usage and creates specific spaces for relaxation or events.
4. Open square: For large events, such as the annual Ferris wheel, the water table can be completely drained. A special setup area is provided to the north of the central stairs for this purpose.
